It Isn’t Winter Yet…

We’ve already had snow this year, and we’ve already had record cold temperatures, so let’s talk about snow.

  • Snow can fall at temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit if the humidity is low enough.
  • The NWS (National Weather Service) explains that snowstorms qualify as blizzards when there are winds of at least 35 mpg for three or more hours, and the snow reduces visibility to less than a quarter mile for the same period.
  • Snow appears white because it doesn’t absorb any part of the color spectrum more than another part.
  • Sadly, snowflakes aren’t unique. It’s easy to find snowflakes that are the same as others.
  • There’s no reason to believe Native Alaskans had hundreds or dozens of words for snow; these come from combining word lists from several languages.
  • Even English has a lot of words for snow depending on what it looks like. Snow can fall in crystals or flakes; it can be densely packed or powdery; the flakes or crystals can be tiny or large, … you get the idea.
  • We’ve all heard that it’s a bad idea to eat yellow snow. Don’t eat pink snow either; the color comes from algae.

Random Snow Thoughts

A supposedly inspirational poster had this saying: “When it snows, you have two choices: shovel or make snow angels.” Oh please. When we were kids, our parents made sure we did the first before we could do the second.

Bill Watterson (cartoonist of Calvin and Hobbes): “Getting an inch of snow is like winning ten cents in the lottery.”

For some reason, this quote from the actor Stellan Skarsgard hits home: “I played a heap of snow in a school play. I was under a sheet and crawled out when spring came. I often say I’ll never reach the same artistic level again.”

Seriously, ‘though…
